The BlackBerry Z10 currently costs around N35,000 and with the Z3 also coming in around the N30,000 mark, pricing may be too close to be a decider. So which device should you be considering if you had to pick one of the two? Only one way to find out, we pit the BlackBerry Z3 vs the BlackBerry Z10.
Design and Hardware
Beauty they say is in the eyes of the beholder, so preferences will obviously vary. Personally though, I prefer the looks, size and design of the BlackBerry Z3. Besides the fact that I think 5-inch displays are the sweet spot for smartphone display sizes, the dimpled back on the Z3 should be nicer to hold and play with and the straight lines and sharp angles of the Z3 appeal to me. The one snag with the Z3’s design for me would be the speaker placement on the back, which should cause sounds to be a bit muffled when the device is laying flat on its back.
I should also point out that the Z3 is missing the microHDMI port on the Z10, so with the Z3 you can only project your display via Wifi Direct or Miracast. Interestingly, though the Z10 can use a MicroHDMI cable and Wifi Direct to share its own display with another screen, it lacks Miracast capabilities due to hardware limitations.
Display
One of the most obvious differences between the Z3 and the Z10 is their display. For starters, the sizes are different. The Z3 features a 5-inch display, while the Z10 features a smaller display at 4.2-inches across. If you flip the coin to the resolution side though, the Z10 packs 356 pixels per inch into that 4.2-inch display at a resolution of 756 x 1280, while the Z3’s display comes in at 220ppi with a 540 x 960 resolution. So if you want a bigger screen, the Z3 is definitely the one to go with, however, if you’re in for a crisper display, the Z10 is your winner. In real-life use, the quality difference while apparent isn’t a deal breaker.
Performance
While I have reviewed the Z10, I haven’t gotten around to reviewing the BlackBerry Z3 yet, so I can’t give a proper assessment of what the performance is like, but we can look at the specs and draw an educated guess based on previous hardware—the BlackBerry Q5 and Q10—which are similarly tiered like the Z3 and Z10.The Z3 features a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 8230 clocked at 1200 Mhz paired with an Adreno 305 graphics chip and 1.5GB of RAM, while the Z10 features a different dual core Qualcomm processor—the Snapdragon S4 plus—clocked at 1500mhz paired with an adreno 225 graphics chip and 2GB of RAM.
In theory, going by the specs, the Z10 should edge the Z3 out in multitasking, while the Z3 might have a slight edge when it comes to graphic-intensive games and loading android apps thanks to the graphic chip and scaled down display.
In real-life? That’s actually the case. The Z3 is limited to running only four active frames, thanks to the RAM, the Z10 on the other hand, can run 8 active frames simultaneously. When it comes to loading android apps though, as you can see in the video below, the Z3 edges the Z10 by a few split seconds.
Camera
The Z10 with its 8-megapixel main camera and 2-megapixel “selfie” camera edges the Z3 slightly in the photography department. The Z3’s main camera is a 5-megapixel sensor while the one in front is just 1.1-megapixel. Seeing as both devices will be running identical software, the sensors would make a difference quality-wise. Whether the difference will be apparent to the naked eye is another topic entirely.Storage and Software
This one is pretty straightforward; the Z3 ships with 8GB of storage, which is expandable to 64GB. The Z10 ships with 16GB and is expandable via SD to 64GB as well. For software, both are running BlackBerry 10.2 right now, and both will most likely see the 10.3.1 update when it drops sometime next year. The Z10 would jump from 10.2 to 10.3.1 directly, but there is a chance the Z3 will see the 10.3 update. Meaning, the Z3 might get to 10.3 first. Both devices would run identical software eventually.
Battery
The Z3 with its 2500mAh and lower resolution display wins this one. It outperforms the 1800mAh one on the Z10. If you left both devices on standby without any use, the Z3 would last 3 days longer. One little thing though; the battery on the Z3 is non-replaceable, while the one on the Z10 is; so if you like to carry spares and swap batteries, the Z10 is the one for you.
Conclusion
Now that it is all laid out, making the choice for which one is down to what size and features matter to you.The Z10 is smaller and more portable, has a sharper display, a replaceable battery, and twice the storage, it has got a better camera and is better at multitasking. While the Z3 has a bigger display, is a faster, offers better battery life and is likely to see software support for longer than the Z10.
